The Glowdown

The Glowdown: Claire Fontanetta

Close your eyes and imagine the closet of your wildest dreams. Is it stocked (read: overflowing) with skincare and beauty products at your disposal? Okay, same. Well, that dream is Claire Fontanetta’s reality as a beauty editor. Currently at Refinery29 and formerly at Marie Claire, she sees every product before the masses and has an arsenal of the best products constantly at her fingertips. So, you can imagine what her medicine cabinet looks like and the wealth of knowledge on all things skincare she holds. Naturally, we wanted to unpack this all and find out what her day-to-day beauty regimen consists of!

The Basics

Name: Claire Fontanetta
Age: 27
Occupation: Beauty Editor, Brand Experiences at Refinery29
Location: New York, New York
Astrological Sign: Aries
Favorite Erno Laszlo ProductFirmarine Moisturizer SPF 30

When were you first introduced to Erno Laszlo? I think I was first introduced to the brand when I was an editor at Marie Claire. We received a mailing of a bunch of skincare staples, and that’s when I fell in love with the Firmarine SPF 30 and Erno’s Sleeping Mask.

What does Erno Laszlo mean to you? To me, Erno Laszlo is a classic brand that will never go out of style. It’s basically the beauty equivalent of a crisp, white button down.

Skincare

Tell us about your relationship with skincare. Where did it start? How has it evolved? I was never really all that into skincare until I became a beauty editor at Marie Claire years ago. Over time — and after interviewing so many dermatologists for stories — I became more and more into skincare and started really taking care of my skin.

Best beauty advice your Mom/Grandma/Aunt, etc. shared with you? My mom is French and always kept her skincare routine super simple. She always taught me to clean my face every. single. night. (No excuses!) When it came to makeup, she’d always say to either focus on your eyes or lips — never both. I still follow that beauty advice to this day.

What is your skincare/beauty guilty pleasure/confession? (We won't judge!) I hate to admit it, but I’ve been known to just jump in bed and (*gasp*) skip my nighttime skincare routine after a long night out on the town.

Walk me through your typical skincare routine AM and PM. How and why does it differ on a daily basis?

MorningFirst, I’ll wake up and use a facial essence or micellar water like SK-II Treatment Essence or Bioderma. Then, I’ll use a cotton pad to swipe on my Biologique Recherche P50 lotion, which exfoliates. Then, I’ll apply a few drops of my favorite antioxidant (SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic) and moisturizer (Erno Laszlo Firmarine SPF 30). That’s pretty much it! I like to keep it easy in the morning.

EveningBy the time I get home from a long day at the office, I usually can’t wait to remove my makeup — especially in the summer months when it’s ridiculously humid and gross out. So, I get home, use Bioderma to remove my eye makeup and then I’ll wash my face with Erno Laszlo’s double cleansing bar and oil. After that, I’ll swipe on SK-II Treatment Essence and then either apply Sunday Riley’s Tidal Enzyme Water Cream or Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Night Oil. Then, I’ll cook and eat dinner with a fresh face and hang out (i.e. watch Netflix or read) for a few hours before I go to bed at the prime time of 10:30pm (I’m an old soul, what can I tell you?). Right before bed, I’ll apply some more face oil (like Sjal’s Saphir Concentrate) to dry areas and then spray on my favorite This Works lavender pillow spray on my pillows and comforter to help me fall asleep. (P.S. the boyfriend loves said lavender spray, too!) I like to keep a huge glass of water and a face mist — like Shiseido Ibuki Quick Fix Mist — on my nightstand for those nights when I wake up parched and feeling super dry. I should probably invest in a humidifier…

Do you have a skincare/beauty hack to share? I love to travel, so an all-natural, do-it-all skincare balm or salve comes in handy on long flights. It can be used as a makeshift hand cream, lip balm, and face cream on dry spots.

You’re stranded on a deserted island and can only bring 5 skincare/beauty products. What are they? SPF is an obvious must. For body, I’d go with La Roche Posay Anthelios Cooling SPF 60 and for face I’d go with Erno’s Firmarine SPF 30. I always love a good face mist, so I’d definitely bring Jurlique’s Rosewater Toner or Mario Badescu Facial Spray. It probably wouldn’t matter (being on a deserted island and all), but I hate it when my hair is greasy so I’d bring a shampoo and conditioner (Living Proof or Ouai). Last but not least, I’d pack a super hydrating lip balm like EOS lip spheres.

Beauty

Describe your standard beauty routine. How does it differ from daytime to evening? My beauty routine doesn’t differ much from day to night; I like to keep my makeup pretty simple and fresh-looking. I’ll apply a light foundation or tinted SPF, a touch of concealer and blush, and my favorite Laura Gellar Baked Gelato Highlighter. Then, I’ll either do a mini cat eye or orange-red lip (Giorgio Armani Lip Magnet Liquid Lipstick in 302 is a current fave) depending on the day, and a healthy coat of Chantecaille Faux Cils Mascara.

On the weekends or at night, I might swap out my orange-red lipstick for a vampy, dark mauve hue (Charlotte Tilbury’s Glastonberry), or maybe I’ll extend my cat eye to make more of a statement.

Who is your #1 beauty icon? That’s a tough one because I don’t really have one person in particular that I would consider to be my beauty icon. If I had to choose one, I’d say Lily Collins because her brows are perfection.

You snoozed your alarm and only have time to brush your teeth and do one step in your skincare/beauty routine. What is it? Concealer to cover my natural dark circles.
