A Mask For Every Mood

Cosmetic masking as a beauty ritual is truly as old as time. From ancient cultures to modern life, masking has been a vital part of skincare routines.

5,000 years ago in India, women who practiced the Ayurveda medicinal tradition used ubtan face masks made by mixing plants, roots, flowers, and herbs, with different ingredient configurations based on skin type. Fun fact: ubtan masks are actually said to be the very first cosmetic product ever used, globally!

Other parts of the ancient world were just as entranced with face masks. In Egypt, the first face masks were made of clay, much like our own Pore Cleansing Clay Mask. Cleopatra herself is said to have used a mask made of Dead Sea mud! (You know where else you can find Dead Sea mud? The iconic EL Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar, of course!)

Masking appears in ancient China, as well. Yang Guifei from the Tang dynasty, who was known as one of the Four Great Beauties of ancient China, had a go-to mask: ginger, jadeite, pearls, and lotus root, ground into powder. Much like modern masks, this one was intended to brighten skin and diminish wrinkles.

Face masks also figured in the beauty rituals of women in ancient Rome. Some common ingredients of their masks included basil juice, honey, and oils – as well as some things we wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole these days, like goose fat or cow placentas.

Since then, the evolution of masking has seen even more experiments in ingredients, from Indian gum to egg whites. Modern masks, including many of our own, make use of naturally derived ingredients for their organic properties, each with their own unique effects on the skin: winged kelp extract in our Hydra-Therapy Memory Sleep Mask is rich in omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids and helps boost skin’s collagen and elastin; charcoal in our Exfoliate & Detox Hydrogel Mask draws out impurities from pores while refining skin; and the mineral-rich white and pink clays in our Pore Cleansing Clay Mask are among the world’s best at absorbing oil and cleansing impurities – to name just a few!

Clearly, we’ve got masking on the mind. Luckily, there’s an EL mask for every mood. Which mood are you in today?

In the Mood to Make It Happen

Sometimes you just want to get things done. The Exfoliate & Detox Hydrogel Mask is perfect for such times. As its name suggests, this hydrogel mask exfoliates and detoxes with deeply delivered antioxidants and extracts. Put this mask to work and you’ll feel as motivated as your skin feels refreshed.

In the Mood to Clean

Our Pore Cleansing Clay Mask perfectly correlates with the sudden burst of energy that leads you to reorganize your bedroom and scrub the kitchen floors at 10pm on a Wednesday night for absolutely no reason. Much like your own house cleaning efforts, the clay mask is a face cleansing powerhouse: it detoxifies, depuffs, purifies, and hydrates!

In the Mood to Go Go Go

Some days are busier than others. As much as you’d rather it didn’t, on these days your full skincare routine might suffer a little bit. But you have so much work to get done, and you need an early start to boot. Give your self-confidence a boost and look more awake by throwing on our Multi-Task Eye Serum Mask eye patches, which brighten, depuff, and firm the under-eye area in just ten minutes.

In the Mood to Recharge

The ideal mask to revive and restore your skin is our Hydra-Therapy Skin Vitality Treatment. Whether you’ve been on the road or simply overworked, environmental stressors have depleted your skin’s glow. Indulge in some serious self-care with the dual-phase formula of this mask, designed to heal and hydrate, quenching even the thirstiest skin.

In the Mood to Sleep

Last but not least, there’s even a mask that will do its magic while you sleep. Weightless and luxurious, our Hydra-Therapy Memory Sleep Mask delivers overnight moisture therapy that puts the beauty in beauty sleep. Its NASA-inspired memory gel texture melts into your complexion, replenishing the moisture skin can lose overnight – up to 25%! Make the most of your sleepy mood with a mask to match.

From Cleopatra to Marilyn Monroe, bespoke beauty rituals have been giving women confidence since the beginning of time. No matter which mood you’re in, pampering yourself with a mask lets you turn your home into a spa, if only for 20 minutes. Let your best self shine through with the perfect mask for your mood!
