It’s called beauty sleep for a reason! And it’s not just your eyes, either – although we’re all too familiar with the pain of dark circles. (Our eye bags are designer!) It’s critical to sleep well each night for the sake of your skin’s overall health. Keep reading to find out more about the effects of lack of sleep and what you can do to keep your skin glowing!

Not enough ZZZs can lead to puffy eyes.
While you’re sleeping, the moisture levels in your body are rebalancing. In fact, your body is literally processing excess water to get rid of it. But when you don’t get enough sleep, the water balance in your body is off-kilter, which leads to dreaded puffy bags and dark circles.

Of course, you can help your skin battle these effects with products that target eye care – one of our favorites is the Antioxidant Complex for Eyes, which helps detoxify, de-puff, and improve elasticity. And if you’re in a hurry and need a quick pick-me-up, you’ll never go wrong with our Multi-Task Eye Serum Masks.

Couple your eye care regimen with a solid night’s rest for long-term skincare success.

Too little sleep deprives your body of nutrients.

Sleep is fuel for your body. When you don’t get enough of it, it’s like you’re only eating fast food or skipping breakfast. When it comes to your skin, know that while you’re sleeping, your body is actually hard at work, clearing away dead cells and creating fresh ones, ultimately renewing the layers of your skin.

When you don’t get enough sleep, you’re harming your body’s ability to do this effectively. Don’t let your nighttime skincare ritual go to waste; make sure your body is in the best position to use those active ingredients to their full potential.

Lack of sleep leads to imbalanced skin.

A major reason that your skin becomes imbalanced when you don’t get enough sleep is thanks to the stress hormone, cortisol. Your body naturally releases cortisol, essentially to signal that you need more rest. The more cortisol that is released, the worse your complexion can get. You’ll probably experience dehydration and redness; you might even start breaking out. Make sleep a priority to avoid all this unnecessary cortisol.

We also have some suggestions if you want to give your skin even more love. Replenish dry skin with our Hydra-Therapy Boost Serum – one pump goes a long way! If skin gets too oily from lack of sleep, try our Pore Refining Detox Double Cleanse first thing in the morning for a gentle but thorough cleanse.

So how many hours do you really need?

When it comes down to it, we’ve gotta rely on the number-crunchers at the National Sleep Foundation. Along with a panel of 18 experts, they scoured over 300 sleep studies to find the magic sleep numbers for people based on age. And when it comes to adults, the numbers are clear: 7-9 hours are ideal.

If you’re not sure where you fall in the range, here’s how to figure it out. First, aim for 7 hours a night. If you don’t feel wide awake all day the following day, add 15 minutes to your sleep the next night. Keep doing this until you feel totally refreshed and wide awake all day.
