In this edition of the Glowdown, we’re talking shop with Dria Murphy, founder of the creative brand building agency Alise Collective. From how she manages the all-important work/life balance when her life basically is her work to the career knowledge she gained from her internships with high-end fashion houses, Dria let us in on what makes her tick – and then some!

Why did you start Alise Collective? Tell us a little bit about your journey to launching your own company.

I founded Alise Collective four years ago. I was working in the start-up space and had to experience, as many do, a disappointment when the business didn’t succeed. Creating Alise Collective happened organically - I looked to my incredible mentors around me and really dug deep to figure out what I wanted to do. From there, I began to take on products, people, brands, and places that I truly believe in and would personally use.

What do you love about the PR work that you do?

I love being able to meet and connect with people. PR has changed so much over the years and isn’t one-dimensional anymore. You can’t just do PR to build success for a brand. You have to have your hands in partnerships, events, social media, etc. I find so much of my day is more in business development and marketing. PR is just one aspect of that.

How do you manage a healthy work/life balance?

I always find time to sweat. Working out on a trampoline is my form of meditation and when I discovered this type of workout a few years ago, I got hooked. It allows me to shut off my mind like I never could before. In other workouts, I would find my mind wandering but you truly can’t think about anything else on a trampoline otherwise you are lost in class. Not to mention, it’s an incredibly low-impact workout for your body.

What’s your favorite place in New York City?

The ness [a bounce and sculpt fitness studio in Tribeca, co-founded by Dria, Colette Dong and Aly Giampolo]. We built the space to be our vision of our favorite place, so there’s really nothing like it.

Can you share one piece of advice that has helped you achieve your lifestyle and goals?

Work hard and hustle. Everything I have built I did on my own financially and I am really proud of that. It hasn’t always been easy and it still isn’t, but it feels good to know I am in control. It’s funny - I think I have a hard time staying present when it comes to personal future, but when it comes to business it’s much easier. I do think that has helped with my success because I haven’t gotten so caught up with next steps and what-ifs. I just go. That doesn’t mean I don’t plan ahead but both my businesses have happened organically and from passion. I never set out to have my own businesses, it evolved over time with what I loved doing and constantly going the extra mile.

What’s one thing that you love about yourself and why?

I love my hustle. I barely take a break when it comes to work, but I have managed to just make it part of my lifestyle. Sometimes this makes it hard to turn off but being able to be my own boss is so rewarding (and terrifying at times).

I definitely attribute this trait to my parents. I feel so lucky to have grown up with them as role models. They truly sacrificed so much for me and my siblings, giving us every tool to go out and succeed on our own, whether it was the top education or endless support with what was going on in our lives.

Tell us about your perfect day. It could be a memory of a real one or a fantasy for a future one!

A perfect day... that is tough. I just recently had one at my brother's wedding with my family. We were all together celebrating with drinks and dancing. It was such a special time and filled with so much love.

How did you get connected with The Surf Lodge hotel? (Our Hydra-Therapy Gel Cream was featured in their mini-bar this summer!)

I met the owner, Jayma Cardoso, at an event... and the rest is history!

What did you learn from interning for Giorgio Armani and Bottega Veneta, in terms of both fashion and business?

I feel so lucky to have gotten to be exposed to such iconic fashion brands at such a young age. Giorgio Armani’s internship program was incredible because we had weekly lunch meetings where a different department presented the ins-and-outs of what they did. It was a great way to learn different aspects of the business outside my PR internship.

What’s your number one go-to fashion accessory and why?
My azlee necklaces. I never take them off and they elevate any outfit.

Who is your #1 style icon?

Brigitte Bardot, Sienna Miller, my Gigi (aka my grandmother).

How did your relationship with self-care begin and how has it changed over time?

I think my relationship with self-care really began when I started seeing a therapist. I have always been active and eaten healthy, but I think self-care comes from taking care of yourself within. Taking care of yourself mentally is hard and the process never really ends.

What’s your favorite self-care trend?

I kind of love how celery juice became a trend. It’s such a good way to start your morning and truly gives you tons of energy.

Walk us through your typical weekday skincare routine.

I always cleanse, serum, and moisturize. I try to mask once a week as well.

What’s your go-to Erno Laszlo product and why?

I love the Pore Cleansing Clay Mask. It really deep cleans my skin without drying me out, which I love for summer when my skin can be a bit more oily.

What is your number one skincare goal?

I’m always trying to look glowy and bright, but I also think sun protection is always on the top of my mind. I want to protect my skin in the long term, not only get a quick fix.

Do you have a skincare hack or “secret” you’re willing to share?

Exfoliate! I don’t think people exfoliate enough. Not only will it remove dead skin and make you glowy and smooth, but it’s also the key to having every product work more effectively. If you don’t exfoliate the dead skin away, your other products can’t penetrate the way they should.
