Many of you will know of International Women’s Day.  A day that falls on March 8th and celebrates women’s achievements and pushes forward towards gender equality all over the world.  But not all are aware that it started back in 1913 in New York and was organized by the Socialist Party of America.

As a brand that was founded in New York in 1927 and one that celebrated bold women from the start like Marilyn Monroe, Jackie O, Greta Garbo and Audrey Hepburn, we are taking a moment to reflect on progress made, to call for continued change and to acknowledge the acts of today’s courageous and extraordinary women.  From the Women’s March back in January or the #metoo movement coming out of Hollywood as well as the Gender Gap Report showing it will take 217 years to close the gender parity gap, this year’s theme of #pressforprogress captured the spirit of our New York office.

We all gathered at the Made Hotel for a morning coffee and chatted about our own personal journeys, sharing both wins and opportunities in this movement.  Our company has a strong commitment to diversity as we expand globally, and we believe that when employees with different opinions, experiences and backgrounds come together, innovation is born.  Today, we celebrate our global offices of women (and men) and will continue to support all of their career aspirations through training and guiding them to leadership roles in the beauty industry and beyond.  It’s our job to make strong leaders for the future and forge positive visibility of women and their achievements.

Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist, once explained, “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.” So with this, take today, International Women’s Day, to truly make a positive difference for all the women in the world through embracing the race, gender, religion and culture of all peoples.

Cheers to the future,

Kristy Watson, Erno Laszlo Chief Marketing Officer
