The Glowdown

The Glowdown: Mai & Dax of @theglossarray

Spring is here and we’re feeling the rejuvenating vibes. In the spirit of the season, we sat down with @theglossarray’s Mai and Dax – as they put it, two girls curating their own glossary of all things beauty. For our next Glowdown, we’re excited to walk you through Mai and Dax’s shelfies post-spring-cleaning, skincare secrets, and more!

Can you “spring clean” a shelfie with us? Break down what you’re getting rid of and why. Show us the before and after.

Dax: “Spring cleaning” is basically a monthly task for me, no matter what season it is. This medicine cabinet gets out of hand so quickly! This time around I’m getting rid of anything that’s empty, expired, or better off with somebody else. There are tons of products that I love, but also ones that don’t work out for me because of my skin type and preferences. I regularly donate gently used and unopened products to Project Beauty Share, an organization that provides women in need with cosmetics, skincare, and hygiene products. I also give some to family and friends.

Mai: Like Dax mentioned, I try to keep my beauty space organized as often as I can, just because I get overwhelmed with clutter easily and it stresses me out when everything is all over the place! However, the space shown below (the side of my bathroom sink), gets out of control the quickest and easiest. Like Dax, I’m also getting rid of things that have expired, or just don’t work for my skin type. I have extremely sensitive skin, and not a lot of ingredients agree with it. I’ll toss expired products, and gift gently used /unopened ones that don’t work for me to my mom, or friends of mine! I like to use this organizer to display products that I’m currently testing, or ones that I know I love and use frequently.

As influencers, you must receive a ton of free product. How do you determine what stays and what goes?

Dax: Determining what stays and goes takes me a little while. I try to always have a look at the ingredients list and see if there’s any ingredient that I know doesn’t go well with my skin type. I’m not a pro at reading ingredients yet, but I’d really like to get there! Otherwise, I’ll give it a try a couple times to see how my skin likes it and if it’s not looking great I’ll pass the product on to someone who might be able to benefit from it.

Mai: If it’s a product that I know right away won’t work for my skin (highly fragranced, rough physical exfoliants, etc), I won’t even risk trying it and I’ll just end up giving it away. Otherwise, like Dax, I’ll give something a shot a few times to see how my skin reacts and determine if it’s something I’d want to transition into my daily / weekly routines. If not, I’ll pass it on to someone that may put it to good use! However, we’re always extremely grateful for brands that want to gift us products. It’s still something that I can’t wrap my head around!

Are there products that are long expired you just can’t let go of and why?

Mai: Honestly, probably so. I can normally tell if something is bad once the consistency/color/smell has changed, but I try not to let it go that long before tossing it out. I try to check the shelf life of a product once I’ve opened it as often as I can, just to make sure I’m not putting something old on my skin (like I mentioned before, my skin is way too sensitive to risk it). I’m definitely guilty of holding onto lip balms for way too long though. I have an obsession and can’t help it!

Dax: There probably are! I’m not great at regularly checking expiration dates or remembering when something was opened. Products like Vitamin C serums where you can tell when it’s been oxidized because of the color are the easiest to know when to toss. I wish they didn’t oxidize so quickly because I love Vitamin C for my skin! I’ve had tons of acne scars in my lifetime and nothing fades them like Vitamin C does. I know I’ve probably held on to the Paula’s Choice C15 Booster for longer than I should have.

Walk us through your typical weekday skincare routine.

Dax: My current morning skincare routine consists of the Erno Laszlo Hydra-Therapy Foaming Cleanse, Bioderma Hydrabio Tonique, Peach & Lily Glass Skin Serum, Erno Laszlo Hydra-Therapy Boost Serum, Barbara Sturm Brightening Serum and Erno Laszlo Firmarine Moisturizer SPF 30. It’s still a bit cold here in NYC and my skin gets dehydrated so easily, so I make sure to have a lot of moisturizing and hydrating products in my routine.

At night I’ll use the Erno Laszlo Hydra-Therapy Foaming Cleanse followed by the Bioderma Sensibio H2O. The Hydra-Therapy Foaming Cleanse actually removes my makeup pretty thoroughly without double cleansing, but I always use Bioderma’s micellar water too just to be sure I got everything off. After cleansing I sometimes do the Erno Laszlo White Marble Dual Phase Vitamin C Peel (again, I LOVE Vitamin C) or I’ll do a wash off mask like the Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask or the Erno Laszlo Pore Cleansing Clay Mask. My skin gets congested a lot especially on my forehead and chin and these masks are amazing for that if used regularly.

Mai: In the mornings, I like to wake up by using some sort of gentle foaming cleanser, like the Erno Laszlo Hydra-Therapy Foaming Cleanse, or by using a micellar water (my favorite of all time is the Bioderma Sensibio one). I normally keep it simple for my AM routine, so I’ll just use a Hyaluronic Acid serum (or the Erno Hydra-Therapy Boost Serum – I’ve been testing it and I love it so far!) and then I’ll moisturize with something light like the Erno Laszlo Firmarine Moisturizer SPF 30 – which I LOVE. It even has SPF too, which is so important! The weather here in New Orleans is so incredibly back and forth, so it’s hard to stay on top of my skin. However, my skin tends to be drier than anything, so moisture is always a go-to for me.

In the evenings, I’ll go more in depth. I’ll use the same two cleansers from my morning routine, and then if I’m masking that night, I normally go for an exfoliating wash-off peel or mask, like the Sand + Sky Australian Pink Clay Mask, or the Erno Laszlo White Marble Dual Phase Vitamin C Peel. If I’m not masking, then I’ll use the Caudalie Vinoperfect Glycolic Brightening Essence, apply a Niacinamide serum, then I’ll follow that up with the Farmacy Beauty Honeymoon Glow (one of my favorites of all time), and then moisturize! I love the Phelityl Night Cream – it’s so luxurious and perfect to sleep in.

What’s your go-to Erno Laszlo product and why?

Dax: My favorite Erno Laszlo product has to be the Multi-Task Eye Serum Mask. Before trying these eye masks, I’ve never seen instant results. My under eyes were instantly brightened, hydrated, and plumped. On top of that, these have the best fit and are super comfortable. I typically use these in the morning before I go out.

Mai: Probably the Phelityl Night Cream that I mentioned earlier! It’s the perfect night cream and feels like velvet upon application. I’ve been raving about it for months now, and even got my mom hooked on it! A little goes a long way, and my skin loves it.

What’s your go-to skincare secret?

Mai: Honestly, probably pimple patches! I know they aren’t much of a beauty secret, but these are lifesavers for me. I’m terrible about picking at pimples, but the patches do all the work for me, in a safe way! I pop them on for a few hours, or overnight, and wake up with either no pimple at all or one that’s vastly diminished! I love the Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patches!

Dax: In the colder and drier seasons, I use hydrating masks in place of nighttime moisturizers and leave them on overnight. Especially in the winter, I wake up with tight and dry skin so using a hydrating mask like the Summer Fridays’ Jet Lag Mask or the Embryolisse Hydra-Masque keeps my skin moisturized throughout the night.

Who’s your #1 beauty icon?

Mai: @aniamilczarczyk on Instagram! She creates the most beautiful makeup looks, and I’m always trying to recreate them on myself, lol.

Dax: Violette (@violette_fr on Instagram). I’m obsessed with how effortless her makeup always looks!

What do you like most about what you do?

Dax: I’ve always loved photography and blogging, really being able to share my work with other people. I’ve been doing it for eight years now. I never would’ve thought that in all my years blogging that I’d end up where I am now, working with Mai on something we’re really passionate about.

Mai: I absolutely adore the creative aspect of it and connecting with bands that I’ve been a fan of for years (like Erno Laszlo!). It’s an amazing experience – the opportunities that we’ve gotten through blogging have been mind-blowing and never cease to amaze me. I’ve always been passionate about the beauty/skincare industry, and being able to work in the center of it with all of these amazing influencers has been such a great experience!

So many influencers operate solo. What do you like about being part of a duo?

Mai: Oh God, it makes things so much easier! We’re able to delegate tasks to each other so that we can tackle projects a lot easier. Dax has been there for me in times that I haven’t been able to work as much, and I really appreciate her! She also has amazing industry/technological knowledge that has come in handy more often than not. I can’t express how much I appreciate her! It’s also great to be able to approach product reviews from two different skin types/preferences. I think we’re able to cater to a larger audience that way!

Dax: I don’t know how solo influencers do it! People may not realize just how much work goes into what we do. We spend a lot of time and effort trying to create content and on top of that, there’s emails, projects, etc. Working with Mai definitely makes everything easier for both of us. The best part about being a duo is actually that it’s brought us together and allowed us to create a friendship. Mai and I met on Tumblr and only met in person recently, about six months into the launch of THE GLOSSARRAY
